MRS. ESTELLA BAILEY-LESLIE
The role of the Belize Customs and Excise Department is to develop and implement an integrated set of policies and procedures that ensure increased safety and security, as well as developing the necessary platform to promote effective trade facilitation and revenue collection.
It is the view of this customs administration that legitimate international trade is an essential driver for economic prosperity. We are fully aware of the importance of ultimately achieving a digital customs whereby additional automation and enhanced electronic activity would positively contribute to the improved coordination of our customs activities, and thus ultimately transform the way customs will operate.
OUR HISTORY
A Brief Historical Background of our Customs Administration
ABOUT BELIZE CUSTOMS & EXCISE
In the early days of the 19th century the inhabitants of British Honduras felt that their territory would amount to something and that it was here to stay. They wanted to build streets and public buildings, a church, maybe even a school.
Consequently they voted for taxes on a number of items that were imported such as liquor, tobacco and slaves. In 1810 Colonel John Smyth, the then Superintendent, appeared before the Magistrates to discuss the “considerable amount of contraband goods that was said to be landed and vended in the Settlement”.
